Iron sights are one of the most basic styles of rifle sights. They consist of two parts: a simple post on the front and a notch in the rear through which the shooter aligns the front post. Many rifles come standard with iron sights. They are durable, easy to use and less expensive than scopes. Adjusting iron sights for elevation -- vertical alignment -- is easy and takes only minimal tools.
Once adjusted, it is difficult to knock the sights out of alignment, which makes them appealing in rugged hunting situations. Shoot at a target to learn whether the gun is hitting high or low. Fire three shots to establish a trend.
Move the rear sight in the direction you want your shot to go. If your gun shoots low, you need to raise the point of impact to hit the bull's-eye, so raise the rear sight. If the gun shoots high, you need to lower the point of impact, so lower the rear sight.

Bought these for the MarkIV Tactical. Was looking for a fiber optic front sight to go with the OEM black out rear and was hoping these would work. They did! I wear bifocals and struggled with getting a clear view on the sight that came with Ruger Mark IV. The Williams Fire Sight was a significant improvement, particularly in lower light conditions in indoor ranges. Once installed she complained the sun was reflecting off the Picatinny rail.
So I removed the rail and it improved the sight picture. These look like quality sights and they look good on the pistol. Had these installed by a gunsmith who did it while I waited. Second session the front orange fiber optic went missing. Although they told me there wasn't a warranty I was sent a new plastic piece that you slide in and then melt the ends to hold it in place using a butane torch think creme brulee. No problem.
With my old eyes I wish the fiber optics were a little larger diameter but overall I am pleased. Customers who bought this also bought:. Magazine Vise Block for. Recently Viewed Items.Open sights are typically installed by a rifle manufacturer as a "default" sight of sorts, replaceable only by installing new sights or scopes.
The open sight, sometimes referred to as an iron sight, is a basic sighting instrument in which the rear sight is a flat piece of metal with a "U" or "V" shaped groove cut into the center. The front sight is aligned--via the shooter's eye--in the rear groove center, with the top of the front sight post even with the top of the rear sight. Once the sight is aligned correctly the bullet should strike at the top of the front sight post as seen through the eye on the target.
Adjusting an open sight is generally a universal process with most rifles. Locate the rear sight adjustment screw or step-slider mechanism to adjust the sight for elevation or windage.
A step-slider can only be adjusted for elevation, while a screw adjustment sight can typically be adjusted for windage only. All rifles will differ slightly, but these two features are typical for open sights. The sight adjustment screw will be either in the rear sight's top center or on the side. The step slider is recognizable by a series of stepped notches under the sight. Slide the sight forward to raise the elevation on the open sight if you have a stepped-slider adjustment.
Pull the sight back to lower sight elevation.
Unscrew the sight adjustment screw--if you have open sights with adjustment screws. To avoid marring the weapon, use a plastic tip screwdriver to loosen the screw. Drift the sight to the left or right to compensate for windage. Use a plastic or brass drift, or a wooden dowel. Hold the drift on the side of the sight, and use a plastic hammer to lightly tap the sight to the right or left to position your sight where you need it. Fire the weapon to ensure that the round is landing on target, or closer to the bull's-eye.

Their products have always been well respected. The latest Williams sight innovation is the famous Fire Sight, which is taking over the upscale open sight market. In addition to Fire Sights for a wide variety of rifles, shotguns and handguns, Williams continues to offer their traditional receiver peep or aperture sights.
These include the deluxe micrometer adjustable "Foolproof" Model FP and the simpler and less expensive 5D hunting model. Both are available for a wide variety of rifles, both current and discontinued models. The receiver sight offers a simpler and more accurate sight picture than standard open sights. The eye looks through the aperture, also sometimes called a ghost ring because it is blurry, making no attempt to focus on the rear sight. Focus is required only for the front sight and target.
The eye will automatically peer through the center of the aperture without conscious thought. The militaries of practically all major powers adopted the aperture sight before the beginning of World War II, testament to its simplicity, durability, and performance.

And the rear aperture sight remains the standard aiming system for military rifles around the world. Today, the aperture sight is not as common on hunting rifles as it once was. Telescopic sights, which put the target and aiming mark in a single sighting plane, have become the preferred sighting system for most hunting rifles. The aperture sight still has its place in the scheme of things. It is very fast to align and does not block the shooter's view of the lower half of the target, as does an open rear sight.
The sight itself may be removed from its base and kept in reserve, leaving room for a low mounted scope in a quick detachable mount. This makes receiver sights a popular option with a good many African hunters, especially those who occasionally use their plains rifles to hunt dangerous game at close range. Another popular application is on pre-angle eject Model 94 Winchesters.
These are outstanding woods rifles, but they are awkward to scope. And a scope interferes with carrying them in one hand, grasped around the receiver. A receiver sight solves both of these problems and is far superior to the open sights supplied with the rifle. To adjust the elevation of the sight, loosen the side friction screw and turn the elevation screw in or out with a small screwdriver. The elevation screw also serves as a stop screw, permitting the sight to be removed from its base and returned without changing its zero.
To adjust windage, loosen the dual clamp screws and gently slide the aperture left or right the desired amount. There are a series of white index marks for both the elevation and windage settings, which make the adjustment process simpler and more accurate. The supplied aperture disc is a good compromise for general purposes. For an extra wide field of view, simply remove the aperture disc and sight through the resulting large opening.

Pre-angle eject Winchester Model 94 rifles were drilled and tapped for receiver sights, so all the user has to do is mount the sight base to the left side of the receiver, using the two provided screws, and slide the sight into the base. Practically anyone can accomplish this simple chore in mere minutes. The hardest part of the whole operation is removing the original rear sight from its dovetail grove so that it does not interfere with the new receiver sight.
